A day in New York City
This weekend I came up to North Jersey to spend the weekend with my big sis (I’ve written a little bit about our move from NYC to Jersey). At the end of October I returned from a 7 month trip in Europe, traveling and working abroad. Now almost a month later I’m finally re-acclimated — seeing family and friends, eating at diners, and saying the word soccer. Yesterday, my sister and I went into NYC to see my brother and my other brothers mom (this family will take time to explain).
We all love the the city and I took my camera along for the ride to snap some pictures of the bike commuting scene.
There are a good number of bike commuters in New York, and they do face a lot of adversity on the roads. Biking in between hoards of cars, buses, and pedestrians, New York is the jungle. And even though, in 2008, NYC laid down a historic 90 miles of bike lanes — if you haven’t heard — New York is massive, and there is a lot more to go. Steps however, are being made in the right direction. Here is a link to all of the bike lanes in NYC is you’re in the city, or going.
Through the city’s Sustainable Streets plan, safety is going up, and bike commuting goes up each year.
A few of the more recent stats for New York City bike commuting:
Highlights of the 2011 Indicator include:
Commuter cycling grew by 8% from 2010 to 2011
Commuter cycling more than doubled from 2007 to 2011
Commuter cycling nearly quadrupled in the last decade – NYC DOT
